Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is susceptible to dental and oral health problems, because of the high glucose content in gingival fluid and blood that can alter the microflora environment in the mouth, such as a bacterial leafy change. Bacteria in the oral cavity that colonize will form plaque, materia alba and tartar in poor oral hygiene conditions so as to affect the prevalence and severity of periodontal tissue disease. Oral hygiene is an effort in maintaining healthy teeth that can be seen from one's behavior. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between dental health behavior on the health status of periodontal tissue in patients with diabetes mellitus at Gayamsari Public Health Center Semarang. The type of this research is descriptive quantitative, using cross sectional design with survey method technique. Sampling technique using purposive sampling. The population in this research is a number of 32 patients. Independent variable in the research is behavior about dental health and dependent variable is health status of periodontal tissue in patient with diabetes mellitus. Measuring tool in this research is using questionnaire and examination. Data obtained from the research results are presented in the form of tables of frequency distribution and cross tabulation. The results of this study indicate that the behavior of dental health tends to affect the health status of periodontal tissue in patients with diabetes mellitus at Gayamsari Health Center, with the behavior of dental health on the aspects of knowledge and attitudes criteria enough, while the aspect of action on the criteria is less. Periodontal tissue health of respondents with 62.5% periodontitis status, 20% gingivitis and 12.5% healthy.
