The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) can ideally reduce/ prevent losses from the use of pesticides such as health problems. The complete PPE that must be used by farmers is: the use of hats, eyeglasses, masks, long sleeves, trousers, gloves and boots. The purpose of the study was to determine the factors associated with the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in farmer groups using pesticides in Nagari Pakan Sinayan, Banuhampu District, Agam Regency in 2018.
Descriptive analytic research method using case control. The population is an active farmer group in Nagari Pakan Sinayan, Banuhampu Subdistrict, Agam Regency, amounting to 121 people, with sample 55 people. Data was collected through guided interviews with a questionnaire guide, then processed computerically with a chi-square statistikal test using SPSS.
The results of univariate analysis revealed 70,9% of incomplete PPE use, 85,5% of productive age, 54,5% of male gender, 52,7% of new work period, 67,3% of low education, 54,5% of low knowledge, 58,2% were negative, and 50,9% were not available PPE. The results of bivariate analysis revealed that there was a relationship between knowledge (p = 0,000), education (p = 0,000), attitude (p = 0,000), and availability of PPE (p = 0,000), use of PPE, and no relationship between age, sex , working period on the use of PPE.
It was concluded that those related to the use of PPE to farmers in pesticide use were knowledge, education, attitudes and availability of PPE. There needs to be an increase in knowledge, attitudes and availability of PPE in the use of PPE in the application of pesticides to reduce the risk of health problems.
