Berdasarkan bahan-bahan tambahan tersebut dikenal jenis rokok putih dan rokok kretek.Rokok kretek dicirikan oleh bau dan rasanya yang khas serta bunyi mengeretek yang timbul dari hasil pembakaran cengkeh yang terkandung dalam rokok kretek tersebut. Sifat-sifat khas tersebut dapat dihasilkan apabila kadar cengkeh dalam rokok kretek cukup tinggiid-ID
