Abstract

One of Department of Health recommendations (2004) is availability of competent health workers assisting delivery. But the coverage of delivery assisted by health workers was just 64%, although of facilities in health were complete enough. And Department of Health continuesly tries to enhance the competency of delivery assistants, either the medical technics, or education, and training on "Komunikasi Inter Personal dan konseling (KIP/K)"; but the intensity of the capability has not been evaluated. The study aimed to determine the knowledge and skill levels among midwives on "KIP/K" in East Java, North Sulawesi, South Sulawesi Provinces. It was a descriptive study. It was conducted in three Provinces in which Provinces, two districts/municipality were selected. They were Sampang and Jombang Districts (east Java Provina). Manado municipality and North Minahasa (North Sulawesi Provinces), Makasar Municipality and Gowa District (South Sulawesi), Samples were midwives and selected by random sampling. The variables measured were midwives knowledge on untensity of know, comphrehension, application, analysis and evaluation and also the intellectual skill. The skill were determined by questionnaire on knowledge and on conative aspects by case reports (Finnet). Results showed 76.6% midwives had training on KIP/K in East Java, none in North Sulawesi and 21,9% midwives in South Sulawesi Intensity on cognitive among respondents tended to increase for intensity of analysis, synthesis and evaluation. In east Java, 30.4% of low intensity of know increased to 39.1% on intensity of analysis and to 100% on intencity of synthesis. In South Sulawesi, 14.3% of low intensity of know increased to 42.2% on intensity of analysis and to 100% on intensity of cynthesis. For intellectual skill, in east Java Province 52.2% midwives had lower skill; meanwhile the overall, 100% midwives in North Sulawest had lower skill to do counseling. It concluded the ability of midwives on knowledge of KIP/K in study areas, the mayority had lower of intensity or cognitive analysis level, synthesis and evaluation. The intellectual skill to make communication for councelling was lower too. Key words: knowledge, communication. skill, counselling, midwives
