ABSTRACTElephantopus scaber is a medicinal plant species that grow wild and scattered at the Purwodadi BotanicalGardens on the location from shady until open.The research aimed to study ecology of E. scaber at the PurwodadiBotanical Gardens. Research conducted in February-March 2012 by observing the type of soil, climate, light intensity and composition of plant species in the vicinity. To determine the composition of the communities whereElephantopus scaber exist then observe the location of: (a) 100% light penetration (open), (b) 26-50% lightpenetration (slightly open) and (c) 5-25% light penetration (somewhat shady). Analysis of vegetation at eachsite was condusted by making selected systematically plots using line of 1 m long by 50 line of each segments:the distance between segments 0.5 m. Inventory of plants carried along the line traversed by noting the type,number and length of the area. Then calculated the relative density, relative frequency, relative dominance,importance value index, diversity index and similarity index at each location. The results showed that E. scabergrown scattered in shady spot to open on light intensity 100-10.000 footcandle. Plant species most commonlyfound in shady location with 5-25% light penetration as many as 19 species, while the least was in the openarea are 12 types, with a diversity index values of 1.88 and 1.84. Elephantopus scaber most commonly found inthe rather open location with Importance Value Index score 105.96, while the least was found in the open areawith the importance value index of 21.96. Vegetation at the rather shady location and open location relativelyhomogeneous and were dominated by grass species Axonopus compressus.ABSTRAKElephantopus scaber merupakan tumbuhan berkhasiat obat yang banyak tumbuh liar dan tersebar di Kebun Raya Purwodadi pada lokasi agak teduh hingga terbuka. Penelitian yang bertujuan untuk mempelajari ekologi E. scaber di Kebun Raya Purwodadi dilakukan pada bulan Februari-Maret 2012 dengan mengamati jenis tanah,iklim, intensitas cahaya dan komposisi jenis tumbuhan di sekitarnya. Untuk menentukan komposisi jenis padakomunitas tempat E. scaber maka dilakukan pengamatan pada lokasi: (a) penetrasi cahaya 100% (terbuka),(b) penetrasi cahaya 26-50% (agak terbuka) dan (c) penetrasi cahaya 5-25% (agak teduh). Analisis vegetasipada masing-masing lokasi dilakukan dengan membuat plot pada lokasi terpilih secara sistematis denganmenggunakan metode garis sepanjang 1 m sebanyak 50 segmen garis; jarak antar segmen 0,5 m. Inventarisasi jenis tumbuhan dilakukan sepanjang garis yang dilalui dengan mencatat jenis, jumlah dan panjang area penutupannya. Kemudian dihitung kerapatan relatif, frekuensi relatif, dominasi relatif, indeks nilai penting,indeks keragaman dan indeks kesamaan pada masing-masing lokasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa E.scaber tumbuh tersebar di tempat agak teduh hingga terbuka pada intensitas cahaya 100-10.000 footcandle.Jenis tumbuhan paling banyak ditemukan pada lokasi agak teduh dengan penetrasi cahaya 5-25% yaitusebanyak 19 jenis, sedangkan paling sedikit adalah pada tempat terbuka yaitu 12 jenis masing-masing dengannilai indeks keragaman sebesar 1,88 dan 1,84. Elephantopus scaber paling banyak ditemukan pada lokasi agakterbuka dengan nilai indeks nilai penting 105,96 sedangkan paling sedikit ditemukan pada tempat terbukadengan indeks nilai penting sebesar 21,96. Vegetasi pada tempat agak teduh dan agak terbuka relatif homogen yang didominasi oleh jenis rumput Axonopus compressus.
